Parent Information/Volunteering

At Horizons, we rely on parent energy, involvement and input

Volunteering

Horizons K-8 is an amazing school, in large part because of our parent community. We intentionally create space for families to gather and build friendships that last for years. We invite every parent to take part, and we also know that work and life limit everyone's time. How much you give, and what that looks like, is up to you.

Every gathering does double duty: it builds community, and it teaches, entertains, or sparks a good conversation. Many also raise money for our school. We start with the Welcome Back Coffee and finish with the End of Year Picnic and 8th grade graduation. In between, there's a lot going on: the Chili Cook-off, clothing swaps, book clubs, game nights, the Fall Dance, the ARTastic Winter Market, Kidtastic, the Pancake Breakfast, the Pool Party, and the Annual Gala & Auction. Coffee & Conversation brings in inspiring and educational speakers.

Central to Horizons is the Council, where parents have both a voice and a vote on many important topics.

Whatever form it takes, your participation is valued at Horizons.

Horizons Book Club

This semester, we will be reading and discussing Good Inside by Dr. Becky Kennedy.

Good Inside

In Good Inside, Dr. Becky shares her parenting philosophy, complete with actionable strategies, that will help parents move from uncertainty and self-blame to confidence and sturdy leadership. Offering perspective-shifting parenting principles and troubleshooting for specific scenarios - including sibling rivalry, separation anxiety, tantrums, and more - Good Inside is a lifetime of self-regulation, confidence, and resilience.

What: A community book study led by the Horizons counseling team in which we read, respond to, and discuss Good Inside. Our first goal is to understand the major themes and findings of the book. Our second and most important goal is to share ideas and next steps for how we may thoughtfully incorporate the book’s themes into our work as parents, caregivers, and educators.

  • Speaker Events — Hosted throughout the year by the Horizons Community Group (HCG) and the Equity, Diversity, & Belonging Committee (EDB).
  • Clothing Swaps — Held once in the fall and once in the spring. Leave what you don't need, grab something new-to-you—free of charge.

Celebrate Together

  • Pizza Fridays — Most Fridays at dismissal (12:45pm), parent volunteers sell Abo's pizza.
  • Chili Cook-Off — A special council meeting where the community shares dishes and recipes and votes on the best chili in the house. Prizes included!
  • Fall Dance — A community-building dance party in the gym every October. Family-friendly, easy-to-dance-in costumes encouraged.

  • Taste of Horizons — A culinary journey through our community's diverse cultures and traditions.
  • Spring Plant Sale — Grab plants and seedlings while building community.
  • Spring Auction Gala — Horizons' biggest fundraiser: an evening of dining and bidding on incredible items and experiences.
  • End of Year Picnic — Bring a watermelon to share and celebrate another year well done!
  • 8th Grade Graduation — Our graduates are celebrated with a ceremony and reception, each sharing a reflection on their learning and relationships at Horizons.
