Attendance & Absences

Attendance Line: 720-561-3600
Email: horizonsk8.attendance@bvsd.org

When reporting an absence, please include your student's name, teacher, and the reason for the absence. Absences are recorded in Infinite Campus, your student's official database and record.

Early Pickup: If you're picking up your student before the end of the school day, please email both your child's teacher and the front office. We'll do our best to have your student waiting in the front office when you arrive.

Late Arrival: If your student will be late, please email or call the front office. For students in grades 5–8, arriving more than 5 minutes late means missing 1st period homeroom — and you'll receive a BVSD robocall reporting that absence.

Attendance Policy

Horizons K-8 follows the BVSD attendance policy. After five days of unexcused absence, families will receive a notice and may be invited in for a conversation about what might be affecting regular attendance.

Please note:

  • School attendance is compulsory at Horizons, as it is at all public schools in Colorado.
  • Students and families are responsible for ensuring that any work missed — excused or unexcused — is completed.
  • All absences and tardies must be reported each morning as they occur.
  • Tardies are excused under the same circumstances as absences and are otherwise considered a form of unexcused absence. Students must still check in at the office when tardy, but the tardy won't be excused unless a parent has communicated with the front office.

Unexcused Absences

You can submit a Pre-Arranged Absence Form to the front office at any time for the Head of School to review.

Family travel on school days is considered unexcused unless it's for a specific life event (e.g., a wedding or funeral). Travel timed around good ski conditions or cheaper airfare is, indeed, unexcused.

Dismissal & Pick-Up

Most students arrive by car, which causes congestion. We encourage carpooling, alternative transportation, or simply walking the two blocks to school. See BVSD's Safe Routes to School for ideas.

Please review the procedures below. They keep drop-off and pick-up safe and efficient for students and neighbors alike.

Dismissal Plans

Make sure your child knows the daily plan: bus, pickup, or SAC.

  • Running late? Call 720-561-3600.
  • If a parent/guardian doesn't arrive at the expected time, children wait in the office.

Early Pick-Up

  • Call 720-561-3600, or come to the front door and ring the bell. We'll bring your child out.
  • Please allow time for them to gather belongings.
  • Give advance notice when you can so they're ready in the office when you arrive.

Morning Drop-Off

  • Doors open at 8:15 AM. There is no supervision before 8:15 AM.
  • Tardy bell: 8:25 AM for K-4, 8:15 AM for 5-8.
  • Follow all parking laws: no double parking, blocking, or parking in driveways, and don't leave your car unattended.
  • Kids should cross only at designated crosswalks.
