Technology Policy

The purpose of this policy is to outline the acceptable use of technology resources, including computers, tablets, internet access, and other digital devices provided by the school. This policy applies to all students.

Internet

An internet access account is available to all students through the Boulder Valley School District. Students are trained to use the internet properly for research purposes, and they must abide by the BVSD guidelines for the Internet (http://www.bvsd.org). Any misuse of the internet may result in loss of privileges.

Acceptable Use

• Educational Use: Technology resources are to be used primarily for educational purposes. Students are expected to use devices and internet access for school-related activities, including research, projects, and homework.
• Respectful Communication: Students must use respectful language and behavior when communicating online. Cyberbullying, harassment, or any form of inappropriate behavior is strictly prohibited.
• Privacy and Security: Students must respect the privacy of others. They should not access, use, or share another person’s account or personal information without permission.

Prohibited Activities

• Unauthorized Access: Attempting to access systems, networks, or data without authorization is prohibited.
• Inappropriate Content: Accessing, downloading, or sharing content that is inappropriate, explicit, or harmful is not allowed.

Device Care and Responsibility

• Proper Care: Students are expected to take good care of school-provided devices. This includes handling devices carefully, keeping them clean, and storing them safely.
• Reporting Issues: Any damage, loss, or technical issues with a device should be reported to a teacher or school staff member immediately.
• Damage to devices beyond the normal wear and tear is the responsibility of parents to cover repair or replacement costs.

Consequences for Policy Violations

Violations of this technology policy may result in disciplinary actions, which can include, but are not limited to:

• Loss of technology privileges
• Notification to parents/guardians
• In severe cases, further disciplinary actions as determined by school administration

Cell Phones, electronic devices, etc.

Cell phones, smart watches, and other electronic devices must be kept OFF and in backpacks throughout the school day. Violations of this policy will garner the following consequences:

• 1st violation: Teacher confiscates device and gives the device back to the student at the end of the day, and notifies parent of the violation.
• 2nd violation: Teacher confiscates device and contacts parent for pick up from the front office.
• 3rd violation: Teacher confiscates device, requests parents come in for a conference to create an action plan for their students' technology.
• 4th violation: The student must turn in their devices to the administration team and pick them up daily for an indeterminate period.

Landline Phone Use

Classroom phones may be used by students with permission from staff. The phones in the office are available, with permission, to students who must contact their parents for transportation needs or if they are ill and must go home. Cell phones or smart watches are not to be used by students during school hours. 

Parent/Guardian Involvement

Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss this technology policy with their children and reinforce the importance of responsible and respectful technology use.
