Donate Stock to Horizons

Thank you for considering a stock donation to Horizons! We accept individual stocks, index funds, ETFs, mutual funds, and other publicly traded, liquid securities. Donating appreciated stock instead of cash can be a great way to increase your impact while reducing your tax burden.

There's a lot of good information online about the tax advantages of donating stock versus cash. Investopedia has a clear, unbiased overview worth reading. As always, we recommend talking with a tax or financial professional about what makes sense for your situation.

A simplified example (confirm details with your CPA): Say you bought stock for $1,000, and it's now worth $2,000. If you donate that stock directly to Horizons:

• You avoid paying capital gains tax on the $1,000 increase in value
• You can deduct the full $2,000 from your taxable income, which may save you a few hundred dollars depending on your tax bracket

If your employer offers a donation match, that $2,000 gift could become $4,000 for Horizons. In other words, for less than $1,000 out of pocket, you could help the school receive $4,000.
