At our level

Kindergarten is where a lifelong love of learning begins. Children arrive curious, energetic, and full of questions, and the best classrooms welcome all of it.

At this age, the best learning looks like this:

Letters, sounds, and stories. Singing the alphabet, rhyming, and listening to read-alouds lay the foundation for reading. Many children begin sounding out their first words.

Numbers through play. Counting, sorting, and noticing patterns come alive with blocks, buttons, and games. Kids learn that math is all around them.

Early writing and drawing. Drawing pictures, writing names, and “inventing” spelling help little hands and big ideas work together.

Learning through play. Pretend play, building, painting, and exploring outdoors develop creativity, language, and problem-solving.

Friends and feelings. Kindergartners are learning to name big emotions like excitement, frustration, and worry, and to find calm ways to handle them. Taking turns, listening, and using kind words help children build friendships and feel safe in a group. Simple routines like morning greetings, feelings check-ins, and cozy calm-down corners teach them that every feeling is okay and every child matters.

Movement and rhythm. Short lessons, songs, and plenty of time to wiggle and move keep young learners happy and ready to focus.

Great learning at this age isn’t about drilling or pressure. It’s about joy, curiosity, and helping every child feel, “School is a place where I belong.”

 

 

 

Choice activities build communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Our academic goals follow state standards, but teachers are always shaping the curriculum around what their students need and love — making Horizons a place where kids discover that learning is fun.
