5/6 Grades
At Our Level
Our 5th and 6th grade program seeks to support students as they navigate their passage from the world of childhood to that of adolescence. Our yearly and daily schedule recognizes that students are moving toward independence, yet benefit from an environment that lends structure and guidance and promotes self-awareness. A “gradual release of responsibility” model finds students beginning the year in familiar relationships with peers and teachers in a homeroom environment, and gradually experiencing learning with a variety of teachers and peers as the year progresses in a variety of content areas. During the day, 5th and 6th grade students share a recess with K-8 in AM; lunch with 5-8 and PM recess with K-6 as a way to foster inter-grade connections and relationships. A focus upon social emotional learning to support academic, artistic growth, and critical thinking, as well as healthy relationships, provides a developmentally appropriate arena for this transitional time of life.
