At Horizons K-8, we identify each student's learning needs and provide tailored activities that honor their interests, choices, and goals. Families and students experience small multi-age classes, individualized goal setting, and an emphasis on quality, original work—supported by authentic assessment, performance opportunities, service learning, and art, music, PE & STEM specials.

Academic Standards

Our curriculum meets or exceeds Colorado Department of Education and Common Core standards, developed by our faculty and aligned K-8 across every content area for a cohesive academic experience.

Key Program Components

• Individual Learning Goals – Students, teachers, and parents set challenging, achievable goals together, reviewed twice yearly. Mastery is demonstrated through projects, presentations, exhibitions, portfolios, and tests.
• The K-8 Experience – Our K-8 focus lets students stay developmentally "younger" longer, with older students serving as role models and leaders—building confidence and a strong foundation for high school.
• Small, Multi-Age Classrooms – Classes of 20–22 students, often staying with the same teacher for two years, encourage mentorship, cooperation, and strong relationships over competition.
• Role of Teachers – Teachers develop curriculum, differentiate instruction, and collaborate closely with each other and with parents.
• Buddies – Older students mentor younger ones, strengthening community across grade levels.
• Special Education – A full support team (psychologist, social worker, OT, G/T advisor, speech/language specialist) implements IEPs, 504s, and ALPs through an inclusion model.
• Literacy Specialist Support – Small-group instruction targets reading and writing growth, guided by ongoing assessment and aligned with the Colorado READ Act.
• Academic Expectations – Students build portfolios and pursue independent learning projects, culminating in an 8th-grade Aperture Project (e.g., "Writing My Way to Health," "Coaching Basketball").
• Homework Policy – Homework builds study habits and independence, increasing in time and responsibility by grade level; planners are used from 1st–8th grade.
