Who Does What at Horizons

We are a Teacher-led School

Horizons has historically been a teacher-led school. Some of the hallmarks of a teacher-led school are:

  • Shared responsibility and decision making; modeling the democratic process for students
  • Responsive teaching using research-based best practices
  • Curriculum decisions made by teachers
  • Flexible model that encourages innovation

Horizons Board

The Horizons Board consists of elected parent members and elected teachers. Parent Board Directors must be part of the Horizons community for at least two years, and no less than 50% of Faculty Directors must be tenured at Horizons for 3 years.

24-25 Board Members

Faculty: Fran Cohen (1/2), Rachel Clionsky (5/6), Jim Freund (7/8),  Adam Brink (3/4), Emmy Kurtz (3/4)

Parents: Travis Lockhart (Parent Board Chair), Mike Ashmore (Vice Chair & Treasurer), Michelle Bargo (Secretary), John Bogosian, Rob Horansky

Horizons Council

Horizons Council consists of any and all members of the Horizons community who attend meetings. All members of Horizons community have the right and the privilege to be part of the decision-making process at Council meetings. Council meetings are held once a month, with the exception of August (when we have Back To School Night), June and July, . Council agendas are published prior to the meeting so that all will have advanced knowledge of the topics that will be discussed. Parents are encouraged to attend Council because every voice is important. All decisions made at Council meetings are made by “concordance” or total agreement to support the outcome. If concordance is not reached by those present at the meeting, the Horizons Board will be responsible for making a decision using the same concordance method.
